MBFW FALL 2013: BIBHU MOHAPATRA

My last day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week could not have started in a better way. I have been a very huge fan of Bubhu Mohapatra for quite some time now. I was invited to his showing in the tents last season but entering the city I was stuck in Lincoln Tunnel traffic for 2 hours prohibiting me from attending his Spring 2013 showing. As I almost ran late again due to city construction on the Upper East Side I just prayed that I wouldn’t again, miss the show. I mean how bad does that look on my part! Super Bad! But fortunately my cabbie after seeing and hearing how frantic I was made sure to get me to the tents on time! Thanks Mr. Taxi Driver, you’re the greatest!

Walking up the steps to Lincoln Center that morning I began thinking how it must feel to show at fashion week and have the support of the CFDA on your side. I put myself in Bibhu’s shoes and tried to think of it as if I were showing (which isn’t hard for me at the least because it is my ultimate dream!) I take my seats and the lights go down, the music starts to play…

Man Ray’s photographs of muses Kiki de Montparnasse and Lee Miller were the driving force behind Bibhu Mohapatra‘s Fall collection, a modern take on 1930s eccentric style. A lattice print wove its way almost all the way through, from a gray and black Jacquard coat for day—belted with a shapely leather corset—to a navy crepe evening gown with laser-cut leather sleeves. “My work is always very geometric,” Bibhu Mohapatra.

There was a large distinction between day wear and evening wear for Mohapatra’s Fall 2013 collection. During the day his lady could be seen in form-fitting top and bottom combos, woolen coats, and with graphic dresses. The graphics were of high importance giving each garment that walked down the runway a statement and a pop of color in the mostly deep hued collection. One could absolutely see his 1930’s inspiration come through with how he synched the waists and the fur accents used for both day & evening. As the collection elegantly glided towards dusk it was sweetly romantic. With a black lace gown, a blush tulle gown with black crystals. and a navy sequin embellished number that stole my heart, I can truly see actresses receiving their best dressed nominations wearing these gowns. Furthermore, I enjoyed his play of color. But the home run was Bibhu’s evening wear.

Looking Forward to Spring!
