September 9th 2010: As the second day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week continues, inside Lincoln Center one could be very entertained just by sitting in the lobby and watching all the fabulous and fabulously ridiculous strut by. As I waited in line to check into the Christian Siriano S/S 2011 collection I did just that, thinking to myself, “I wonder what Christian would say about this person or that person…”
Even though I did not have the ever-so “fierce” Project Runway winner by my side, I did however have my partner in crime Ross B. to aid in the banter. As security scanned my ticket and I walked into the “stage” (the tent where the CS show took place) and I took my seat in the 3rd row! I felt my heart beat faster and faster with excitement. For Christian Siriano is a designer after my own heart with his love of opulence which include; luxurious fabrics, billowing Ruffles, Feathers and Fur.
Now, since this collection is for spring there were not any feathers or fur shown. Instead, what was on the runway was an array of colorful and shiny snake-skin frocks which seemed to be a bit passé. As a pair of red snake-skin trousers walked down all I kept saying to myself was “Wow, I think Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler rocked these in the 70’s!”
As we all know, Christian Siriano is known for his extravagant evening wear pieces. Backstage Christian explained how his inspiration for this collection is a cross between a little bit of Asian, a little bit of African, with hints of Mediterranean flair. Season after season he has brought forth more ready to wear. This was a major focus for this season’s collection in showcasing a large display of cropped trench coats, safari jackets, flared trousers, and flowy satin tops.
The collection started off with a few lovely simple white dresses with small ruffled and rouched detailing and then transcended into an abyss of metallic gold, turquoise /brown, and red snake skin printed and embossed everything. IE: the Steve Tyler like pants. Although lovely, it was not very cohesive.
For the finale Christian perfectly executed the most outrageously breathtaking heaps of ruffled tulle I have ever seen! FINALLY, this is what I came to this show to see! As a bright red gown made of the most voluminous asymmetrical draped tulle sashayed down the runway my heart skipped a few beats. All I could think to myself was “Why is Christian trying to conform to the masses? He needs to stick with his over the top evening wear!” As each gown was presented the audience applauded which is something I have not seen done at fashion week for some time now.
Getting back to the Prints; a lot of what this “fierce” designer chose to use this season reminded me of a lesser Alexander McQueen, from his last living collection. (You know, the kaleidoscope animal prints). This also includes the extreme tranny heals that he designs for Payless that will be in stores soon! Maybe he was trying to pay tribute to such a loss in the industry and a designer I am sure he has looked up to for many years. I am looking forward to seeing what the 24 year old designer has in store for the fall. I truly hope he stays true to himself and goes all out with his fabulousness! BRING ON RUFFLES, THE FEATHERS, AND THE FUR!
*Some celeb spotting from the front row: Model Veronica Webb, Maggie Grace, Alan Cumming, Katrina Bowden , and singer Jojo who told me she liked my ruffled sleeve blazer from across the runway! Pretty cool, pretty cool!
